Chapter Ten

The sight of Bennett brings a myriad of different emotions inside of me. I want to lean forward and kiss him. I want to take him to bed instantly. I want to shut the door and tell myself this is for the best. My dream comes back to me in flashes and my grip tightens on the door.

He looks as if he has flown a red eye and just landed. He has bags under his eyes. His t-shirt is a size too large for him and he is soaked through from the rain. His jeans are wrinkled. His blue eyes are cloudy, as if the grey skies have filled up his pupils.

“Bennett,” I finally say since he apparently isn’t going to say anything first.

The sound of my voice seems to snap him out of the trance he has fallen in upon seeing me. He runs his fingers through his hair.

“I forgot an umbrella,” he finally says. “Sorry, I’m all wet.”

“Are you cold? I can get you a towel,” I say, unwilling to offer him to come inside just yet.

“I’m fine,” he replies and as if his body wants to prove that he is lying, he shivers.

The sight of Bennett, wet and shivering, like a puppy looking for his owner, shoots through my heart. I sigh and move to let him come inside. He picks up the suitcase that is at his feet and steps inside the apartment. I shut the door behind him and we are both staring at each other again.

“I didn’t know you were coming home.”

“I wanted to see you,” he says.

I can feel my eyes widen in surprise only because this is the last thing I thought I would hear. I assumed he had come home because his dad had asked him to.

“We need to talk,” Bennett says, “like actually talk. Instead of fight and then bicker on the phone.”

“You’re right. I was going to make some coffee. Do you want some?”

“Yes, please.”

I move past him and ignore my urge to reach out and grab him. Now that he is here, in front of me, I’m hit by how much I have really missed him. I tell myself to get a grip and go into the kitchen. Bennett follows and hovers in the middle of the kitchen, looking around.

“Quiet here without Emily,” he remarks as if Emily made a ton of noise.

“She’s doing okay though,” I say as I measure out the coffee. “Saw her dad recently. I think they had a good talk.” I leave out the fact that his father was mentioned and that I know that Kevin was in love with Angel.

“Is that a burner phone?” Bennett asks, sounding amused and pointing to the phone I had left on the kitchen counter last night.

I curse inwardly. I was so tired when I finally got home last night that I had just tossed my purse on the counter along with the burner phone. Bennett picks the phone up now and holds it up, as if to prove to me it is really there.
